Raspberry Pi prices rise, some models are out of stock

The Raspberry Pi 4 2GB model of the Raspberry Pi family is experiencing a temporary price hike. Indeed in an article published recently (last October 20) on the company's blog, Eben Upton, then CEO of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, explains the out of stock Raspberry Pi products are experiencing and the direct consequence that is increase in their price.

COVID 19 and containment impact Raspberry Pi production

The health crisis linked to COVID 19 that is going through the whole world has disrupted the production chain of several elements in key sectors such as semiconductors; flagship components of electronic devices and therefore Raspberry Pi. The increased demand for semiconductors for the manufacture of laptops and other electronic accessories quickly leads to a shortage of semiconductors. As a result, the production of Raspberry Pi is slowed down to the point where the Raspberry Pi 4 2GB variant and the Raspberry Pi Zero have experienced a temporary shortage of stock. But that's not the only problem:

Raspberry Pi old models Compute Module 3, Compute Module 3+ and Raspberry Pi 3B will be prioritized to the detriment of Raspberry Pi 3B + in 2022
The price of the Raspberry Pi 4 2GB model will increase by around $ 10 and will therefore drop from $ 35 to $ 45.

The CEO explains it himself: Unfortunately, the cost increases caused by the current shortage mean that this product is currently not economically viable at this reduced price. So we're bringing it down to $ 45 on a temporary basis.

  
What to reassure

These solutions are nevertheless temporary, specifies the CEO. They are set up to meet customer demand for Raspberry Pi (recent models) and will be reviewed if the situation changes.
So he adds: We expect to have enough 28nm silicon over the next 12 months to support our current customers, and there are signs that the supply chain situation is starting to be less strained.

We can then hope for lower prices and availability of certain models on the market soon.
